B.J. the Chicago Kid - "Fantasecret" from b.j. the chicago kid on Vimeo.

I’ve enjoyed this euro feel for the past few years. I like the 80’s-esque pop records that have come out over the past few summers. I love the parties and the clubs. It’s a part of me but there is a feeling that I miss. Nights with my baby, mornings before work, and weekends there is a certain feeling I want in my house.

The black American music that came to influence so many has changed a lot. I can appreciate it. There are times that I want to strip the sound down and get it like I used to. My friend BJ and Jesse Boykins do something with music that I grew up with. I’m just accustomed to a little soul in my music. No hi-tech cover ups or pro tool secrets, these guys are incredibly talented. I’ve had the chance to kick it with BJ and he’s just as real and charismatic as his songs let on. He has that Chi-town unapologetic look in his face and he just does him. Not arrogant but just confident. I dig what I’ve heard from him.

I’ve never met Jesse but the music that I’ve heard is something you can live to. Hip-hop being so hypermasculine and pop music being kind of estrogenic it can be tough to find a nice medium but Jesse does that. Music you can play for your girl without feeling like you should leave the room to let them be alone. LOL. I hope for success for these guys in 2010 and beyond and moreso, I’d like to be a part of the history they make.

The Stars

"Both destiny's kisses and its dope-slaps illustrate an individual person's basic personal powerlessness over the really meaningful events in his life: i.e. almost nothing important that ever happens to you happens because you engineer it. Destiny has no beeper; destiny always leans trenchcoated out of an alley with some sort of Psst that you usually can't even hear because you're in such a rush to or from something important you've tried to engineer."

808 Experiement: Blac Waldo Remix

In the fall of 2008, a production team out of Atlanta, GA created a compilation of sorts. They compiled several emcees from the Atlanta Area and with their signature sound of beats, created the best local mixtape that year (according to Creative Loafing). The tape spawned several local hits including a little monster by myself called "Alien (When In Rome)" featuring Savage and Gilles.

OK. So now here at the close of 2009 Blac Waldo brings back the acclaimed mixtape and remixes 10 of the joints. Artist, Corey Davis, is responsible for "remixing" the artwork. Above is the cover art for the original 2008 mixtape done by Diwang Valdez and below is Corey Davis' cover for the remix LP. Play a little "where's waldo" and see if you can spot Jay West on the covers.

Corinne Bailey Rae

What's more impassioned than knowing someone's story and hearing them propel through it musically? Kanye's 808's and Heartbreak brought to mind some rather eerie images and cut us with the shattered-glass songs he made that expressed his feelings surrounding a break-up and a death. Rihanna and Chris Brown both dance on their sides of their stories with their recent works. Now, we have Corinne Bailey Rae returning to us with new music after the untimely death of her husband, musician Jason Rae. Check out her latest video for, "I'd Do It All Again"

Corinne says:
"It was written literally just after me and Jason had this massive disagreement, a big argument, a bad one," she says now, faltering. "Almost as he was leaving the room, I just sat down and wrote it. It's just about how I felt about him at that time. Even right in the middle of the worst times, I remember thinking that I would choose this exact life again, that I would do it all again. It was me saying, I'm not wishing myself out of this situation. I'm 100% committed to this person. I don't have any regrets about this relationship even though there are all these difficult times."

Washed Out - Belong (Music Video) from Blake Salzman on Vimeo.

I heard music from Washed Out and instantly I was sold. The sound is so right. If I made a really artsy porno this would be the score. Watching this video made me think that would be okay to do. Follow my train of thought. Watch the video for yourself.

Erykah Badu Listening Session

Erykah Badu Levitates from Creative Control on Vimeo.

Not many artists, or people in any field, are as captivating as Badu. She feels like a force but its not forceful. There's an energy but its not hyperactive. She is incredibly charismatic and its awesome. I am friends with one of her good friends who always has stories about their adventures together. This is one woman that I want to meet but I can say that I'm intimidated by the idea. Not a lot of queens out there still behaving like royalty but she is one of the last ones left. Check out this listening session brought to you by Creative Control.

BTW: I told you to watch Dame.
